Day 176, Romans 15

Romans 15

Paul concludes his teaching with a summary of the key points he is making. Firstly, that maturity is recognized by patient embrace of those less mature. Would that this truth were more widely held today, for it is a mark of Christ’s character.

Paul also mentions that the scriptures encourage and inspire us to this endurance. I trust that is happening as you read with us!

Next, in a statement that could be a prayer as much as an exhortation, Paul asks that unity among them flow from their relationship with Jesus.

Finally, Paul restates his point that Jesus is the Messiah of the Jews AND all the people of the world. And he quotes Psalms, Deuteronomy, and Isaiah to support this conclusion.

In the second half of the chapter he goes on to outline his plans to visit them, and to go on to Spain, pioneering the spread of the gospel. As you read verses 14 to 21, ask yourself “to what degree is this true of me?” And in the final verses of this chapter, notice how Paul’s coming to Rome will benefit both the Christians there and the apostle himself. This leadership journey is a two-way street.

As we conclude Romans in our next reading, we will see personal greetings, final instructions and a doxology (statement of praise to God), but for today, verse 13 is a fitting conclusion and prayer:

Now may God, the fountain of hope, fill you to overflowing with uncontainable joy and perfect peace as you trust in him. And may the power of the Holy Spirit continually surround your life with his super-abundance until you radiate with hope!

Have a great day!

Mark.
