Day 136, 1 Corinthians 4

1 Corinthians 4

Paul now goes on to expand his correction over the human practice of creating factions by promoting one famous name above another. The Corinthians have been promoting this error, seeing Apostle as a title and a position of power, thus making their immaturity evident. By contrast, true apostles (sent ones) are faithful, trustworthy, and willing to suffer all kinds of indignity with patience and a heart for reconciliation.

This is such a different picture of authority to the one the carnal Corinthians have accepted. And Paul uses a good deal of hyperbole to expose their error. Yet his heart is not to condemn or judge, but to restore and correct. He is a father to them, not just the latest, greatest televangelist.

The contrast throughout this chapter is between those who exalt themselves (or accept the exaltation of factional followers) and those truly called by God, who resemble Jesus in their humility, care for all humanity, and willingness to suffer.

Our God is a suffering God who brings redemption. True leaders in the Church are like Jesus.

Have a great day!

Mark.
