Day 134, 1 Corinthians 2

1 Corinthians 2

Paul began his letter emphasizing the generosity of God in accepting and gifting spiritual “nobodies” (in contrast to the pride and individuality on display in Corinth, and thus also in the family of believers in that city). Today, he goes a step further and reminds them how he first brought God’s truth to them: not with clever words but the demonstration of the Holy Spirit’s power. God wants us to trust first in His power, not our own understanding.

And then Paul balances that truth with the news that God has great and mysterious wisdom for us to discover and explore. The focus on power is not an invitation to ignorance. There is a distinct difference between the Spirit of God who inhabits believers and the spirit of this world who prioritizes human power, judging by appearance, and resisting change.

Those two are polar opposites, and God is committed to leading us into the counsels of the divine, revealing spiritual truths that this world can never comprehend. It seems insanity to this world, but those who are in-dwelt by the Spirit of God embrace what CS Lewis described as “deep magic from before the dawn of time” - incomprehensible to the spirit of this world, yet infinitely more powerful and victorious.

This is our inheritance.

Have a great day!

Mark.
