Day 33, Luke 8
On Day 31 we jumped ahead in Luke to maintain our approximate chronology; today we are back to Luke 8, where we read several parables from yesterday’s reading in Matthew. Remember that Matthew’s gospel in constructed in blocks, in the manner of a preacher. Thus he gathers many parables together. Luke is writing as an historian, for Gentile readers, and so emphasizes details such as the wide array of women who followed and supported Jesus. That was a most radical departure from convention in that day.
As you read today, notice how Luke places the parables together with several incidents where Jesus is notably peaceful in the face of challenges: “your family are outside wanting to speak to you,” “We’re sinking and we’re going to drown!” and “we are a whole mob of demons!”
Luke intends us to see that hearts open to truth, even when it is challenging, can face the trials of life with trust in God.
And our chapter concludes with two memorable miracles that underscore the power of trust in Jesus. When we allow our hearts to trust, there’s no limit to what God can do. Whether we are well-known and respected (Jairus, the synagogue leader) or unknown and left to suffer (the woman), the life of God is available if we trust Jesus.
What will you trust Him for today?
Have a great day!
Mark.
