Day 144, 1 Corinthians 12

1 Corinthians 12

The Corinthian church was distorted in their understanding of spiritual gifts, just as some of the American church is today. Seeing these gifts as rewards for fervor, or marks of superiority, is a great error. Instead, Paul makes clear that spiritual gifts are given by the Holy Spirit, as God chooses, and no spiritual gift will ever contradict scripture or God’s nature.

It is tempting to either seek all the gifts, or to ignore the gifts altogether. One error is powerless, the other is misguided in thinking that more gifts equals more of God, which Paul clearly disallows. God is looking for diversity in unity. E pluribus unum (as our nation’s motto goes) - Out of many, one.

So don’t see gifts as medals for spirituality, nor dishonorable distractions to be suppressed. Instead, welcome how God distributes gifts according to His will, and His plan. Whether you are an eye, a hand or a foot in the Body of Christ, you are essential, and you need the other parts of the body to be effective.

Have a great day!

Mark.
