Day 66, Mark 10
We start this week at the same point of Jesus’ ministry as we finished last week. Mark’s gospel is a foundational Kingdom gospel, focused on the authority of Jesus and the conflict this generates. In Mark’s account of the Pharisees’ questions, and the encounter with the rich young leader, the sparse language and phrasing highlights the authority of Jesus.
Mark includes the request from Jacob (James) and John (perhaps for contrast) that they can sit on His right and left when He rules over all. Jesus’ response shows us clearly that true authority is not a matter of position and power, but of service and sacrifice. Notice that all three times when Jesus predicts His death and resurrection are followed by the need to correct the disciples for misunderstanding this principle (see Mark 8:31, 9:31 and 10:33).
Finally, the healing of Timai (Bar-Timaeus in Greek) shows us an example of the right kind of passionate desire - to be whole and follow Jesus. Notice how his shouting for help grows louder and more intense as the crowd try to silence him.
What are you desperate to see Jesus do today? Ask Him - He wants to answer!
Have a great day!
Mark.
