Day 50, Luke 9:28-62
Finally this week, we return once more to Luke 9, to benefit from Luke’s researched account of Jesus’ words after the Transfiguration.
We learn that Jesus is focused on the last lap of His time on this earth: “Jesus let nothing distract him from departing for Jerusalem because the time for him to be lifted up drew near, and he was full of passion to complete his mission there.”
We also see another glimpse into the frailty of the disciples. Jacob and John think they know the answer to the rejection by the Samaritans - call down fire from heaven! That’s what Elijah did with the prophets of Baal: it’s a tried and proven way of demonstrating God is truly God. But Jesus loves Samaritans too; He came to save, not to burn!
Such focus and compassion is hard to handle for many. The chapter concludes with people offering to follow Jesus, but with conditions. And Jesus is not impressed with the excuses: half-hearted following is not going to work. “If you look back you are not fit for the Kingdom of God.”
So let’s be wholehearted in our obedience and follow closely, listening for God’s perspective (especially when we run into opposition). Win each battle with love and follow the shining One!
Have a great day!
Mark.
